July–August is peak season, offering lively islands and strong Meltemi winds, especially in the Cyclades. Ideal for experienced sailors looking for exciting, sporty sailing, though marinas and anchorages are busier.

Meltemi Wind
• The Meltemi is a strong, dry northerly wind that blows mainly in summer
• It is most common and strongest in July–August
• Typical strength: 20–35 knots, which is strong for sailing—especially on charter boats
What this means for you:
• Sailing can feel fast and exciting, but also physically tiring
• Waves are short and choppy, not smooth
• Mistakes matter more: late reefing or poor timing can quickly make conditions uncomfortable
────────────────────
Strongest in the Cyclades
Islands such as Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, and Santorini are:
• Very exposed to open sea
• Separated by channels where wind accelerates
• Known for gusty, variable conditions
In practice:
• One island may feel calm, while the crossing between islands can be rough
• Afternoon sailing is often uncomfortable due to stronger winds
• Docking and anchoring require confidence and good boat handling
Because of this, the Cyclades are often considered "advanced" sailing territory during summer.
────────────────────
Ionian Sea (West Greece)
The Ionian Sea (Corfu, Lefkada, Kefalonia, Zakynthos) is very different:
• Winds are generally:
- Lighter
- More predictable
- Often gentle sea breezes
• Seas are usually calmer
• There are many sheltered bays and short sailing distances
What this means for you:
• Easier sailing days
• Less stress for the crew
• More opportunity for learning, relaxing, and enjoying the trip
────────────────────
Saronic Island Weather
Weather & Wind:
• Winds:
- Generally light to moderate, 5–15 knots most of the year
- Summer winds are gentle compared to the Cyclades
- Rarely affected by strong Meltemi winds
• Seas:
- Usually calm and flat, especially near the islands
- Small waves mostly appear in open stretches between islands
• Sun & Rain:
- Very sunny from May–October
- Rain is rare during summer
Takeaway: The Saronic waters are easy, predictable, and comfortable for sailing.
────────────────────
Practical Tips
• Distances: Islands are very close together — 1–3 hours sailing per leg
• Anchorages & Harbors:
- Plenty of sheltered bays
- Marinas are well-equipped and safe, even in windier weather
• Best for:
- First-time sailors
- Short trips (weekend or 3–5 days)
- Families or mixed-experience crews
The Saronic Gulf is one of the calmest and most beginner-friendly areas in Greece. Winds are light, seas are smooth, and islands are close together, making it ideal for relaxed and easy sailing.
